In 1929 Gio Ponti, an Italian designer of majolica wares, designed several globe-shaped vases, of which only 5 were executed (models 1151, 1175, 1179, 1186, maximum circumference 93 cm, height 31 cm). His original idea was to create a collection item where the continents were to be decorated with many attributes and figures, which characterise the terrestrial and marine life. E.g. in the North Pole there would be a bear, eskimo and airplane, the latter as a symbol of the 1928-1929 exploration of Wilkins and Byrd. This design, however, was never executed.
