Remarks In 2005 I was called by a employee of a university library whether I was interested in a cartifact she had found in the legacy of a great-aunt. It turned out to be an cotton 1881 globe, which can be inflated through an umbrella-mechanism. It came in a wooden box of about 70 cm length and was given as a gift in 1881 to celebrate the revival of the famous Elsevier publisher with the publication of the collected stories of Jules Verne. The cartouche reads:
De Elsevier-Globe, naar de nieuwste bronnen bewerkt onder toezicht van Dr. G.J. Dozy, gratis premie op HET BOEK DER REIZEN EN ONTDEKKINGEN. Rotterdam. Uitgevers Maatschappij 'Elsevier' (The Elsevier globe, adapted to the newest sources under the supervision of Dr. G.J. Dozy, free premium on The BOOK OF TRAVELS AND DISCOVERIES. Rotterdam. Elsevier Publ. Comp.)
This form of globe was inspired by Betts' New Portable Globe (an umbrella type globe) published in London beginning in about 1860 and continuing into the twentieth century (van der Krogt). The similarity between this globe and the Betts globe of the same period is such that one might believe that Betts made this globe under contract with Elsevier (see Dekker and van der Krogt: Globes from the Western World p127).
